NSFC Enrichment

Criminology Club
Criminology Club is a fantastic extension/extracurricular activity for Sociology and Psychology students, or anyone curious about the world of Criminology.
Over 6 weeks, students will study what Criminology is and the main theories behind it. Students will also create their own profile and apply the techniques and knowledge gained.
What will you cover in this enrichment
Week 1:
-
Outlining "What is Criminology?" and addressing/voting on critical debate questions such as "Some demographics (groups) of people commit more crime than others"
-
We also introduce the purpose of the enrichment, to create a Criminal Profile with a case of their choice, applying the theory they learn throughout these sessions.

Week 2:
-
Introduction to the Nature vs Nurture debate, looking at classical criminological theory and creating an argument between both perspectives. Having the students draw conclusions and argue from both sides of the debate.
-
Last 15 minutes: The Students will also begin choosing the case study which they are going to focus on for the coming weeks, completing some independent/small group research.

Week 3:
-
Introducing the students to the perception of crime in the media, showing the oversaturation of some crimes and how this shapes our understanding of crime. We also look at Psychopath, where the students will complete the psychopathy test, analysing the questions for validity.
-
The students will then apply their knowledge of the media and psychopathy to their case study, identifying similarities or differences with psychotic traits and, looking at media depictions of their case (if any).
Week 4:
-
The students will be looking at top-down criminal profiling techniques and the applications/creation of this technique by the FBI. We focus on the students completing a crime scene analysis using a top-down approach, applying their knowledge of organised or disorganised criminal types to their interpretations.
-
The students will apply this knowledge to their case studies, explaining behaviours patterns.
Week 5:
-
Students will finalise their projects and apply all the knowledge further to their projects, creating the final overall project presentation

Week 6:
-
Students will present their work, students will ask questions about other members projects. Students will cast votes on the projects for effort, level of research, presentation and creativity.
