Marine Biology

Marine Biology isn’t just swimming with dolphins and saving turtles from plastic straws. In this enrichment we delve into the broad, diverse and often strange world of Marine Biology.

From otherworldly starfish chomping their way through the Great Barrier Reef, to discussing the future of zoos and aquariums we will tackle a few of the pressing issues that Marine Biologists around the world are working to find a solution to.

If you are aiming to be the next David Attenborough of the Oceans, or just want to learn a little bit more about the current issues affecting our wonderful marine world give this enrichment a go.

What will you cover in this enrichment

Week 1

Investigate the Crown of Thorns starfish and the impact it is having on coral reefs around the world. Come up with a plan to deal with the exploding population of COT on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and present ideas to group.

Week 2

Discuss the concept of Marine protected areas – why are they used and what makes them so important. Research a potentially marine site that may need protection and come up with a proposal to convert it into a marine protected area.

Week 3

Finish proposal for MPA and create a poster that summarises that proposal.

Discuss the role of divers in marine biology, look at different training available and what you can do with the skills obtained.

Week 4

Zoos and aquariums – are they good or bad? Do they support conservation efforts around the globe or should they be closed permanently. What about SeaWorld and similar operations?

Week 5

The problem with Plastic – We discuss why plastic has become such an issue, especially in the marine environment. Brainstorm ideas to tackle the issue.

Week 6

Species identification – investigate several different species found in the marine environment. Match them to their habitat and discuss the great variety found in the oceans.
