Miniature Painting

Learn and Practice miniature figure modelling and painting techniques. Everything from preparing your miniatures for painting, through getting “tabletop ready” all the way to advanced techniques suitable for dioramas and presentation pieces.

Any miniatures can be used, including all games workshop, star wars, battletech, warlord and many more. We will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of several paint systems, including Citadel, Vallejo and Army Painter among others.

What will you cover in this enrichment

Week 1

Pre-painting and undercoats – how to prepare models for painting, including dealing with mould lines, flashing and nubbins. Considerations of sub-assemblies, and model grips. Spray undercoats vs paint-on. Undercoat colour suitability.

Week 2

Basecoats and layers – how to use block colours for base coats, and considerations of colour theory for choosing layer colours. Techniques for applying basecoats and layers. After this stage, models should be considered “tabletop ready”.

Week 3

Washing and Drybrushing – After layering, considering how to add high- and low-lights with washes and drybrushing. When washes and drybrushes are suitable and best techniques for applying both.

Week 4

Edge Highlighting and Details – Adding some of those finishing touches to bring life into miniatures. Practicing “steady-hand” techniques and using the correct brushes for the level of detail required. Giving those special characters in your collection a bit more care and attention to make them stand out.

Week 5

Advanced Techniques – considering some of the more advanced techniques, such as blending, feathering, free-hand stencilling etc required to give centrepiece models that extra flair required for presentation or dioramas.

Week 6

Alternate techniques and Speed Painting – Use of systems such as contrast paint, and techniques such as “slap chop” or batch airbrushing to get whole collections painted up quickly.
